Xavier Garbet graduated from the École Normale Supérieure (Paris) in 1985 and obtained the Agrégation in Physics the same year. He received his PhD from Aix-Marseille University in 1988 and the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches in 2001. He is currently a Research Director at CEA (France) and Professor at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

His research focuses on magnetic fusion energy, with particular emphasis on turbulent transport and plasma stability, spanning theory, modelling, and experiments. In recognition of his scientific contributions, he received the CNRS Silver Medal in 2010, the Fernand Holweck Prize in 2019, and the EPS Hannes Alfvén Prize in 2022.

X. Garbet has co-authored 361 peer-reviewed publications (H-index = 63), supervised 24 PhD students and 14 postdoctoral researchers, and led several large-scale research projects in Europe. He is currently the Head of the NTU/CEA SAFE Joint Research Centre.
